Continuing along it highly successful growth trajectory, SFFedCU is seeking an Underwriter for our Golden Gate Branch in San Francisco.

 

The Position

 

The Consumer Loan Underwriter plays a key role in San Francisco Federal Credit Union’s lending strategy by evaluating and underwriting consumer credit applications across multiple channels. This position uses independent judgment to assess creditworthiness, structure loan terms, and ensure decisions align with lending policies, risk appetite, and regulatory standards.

The Underwriter analyzes complex applications, interprets financial data, and uses system tools to deliver sound, timely credit decisions. The role partners with members, internal teams, and merchant partners to support loan quality, efficient funding, and a strong member experience.

Additionally, the Underwriter contributes to process improvements, identifies portfolio trends, and serves as a subject matter expert in consumer credit risk. Weekend shifts may be required to meet business needs and maintain service levels.

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Independently underwrite and issue credit decisions for consumer lending products—including auto loans, unsecured personal loans, credit cards, and indirect loans—within assigned lending authority.

• Perform comprehensive credit review, including analysis of credit reports, income verification, debt-to-income ratios, collateral valuations, employment data, and borrower-level risk indicators.

• Structure loan terms and conditions to balance risk mitigation with member needs; propose alternative credit solutions—while identifying potential new lending opportunities.

• Document underwriting decisions with clear, accurate, and compliant rationale in accordance with regulatory and internal standards.

• Ensure all underwriting decisions comply with credit policy, internal controls, and federal/state regulations (e.g., Reg B, ECOA, FCRA, UDAAP).

• Ensure consumer loans comply with policy and that exceptions or overrides are properly approved, documented, and tracked.

• Monitor portfolio trends and provide feedback to management regarding credit quality, program performance, and potential policy enhancements.

• Support timely and consistent underwriting across digital, branch, and indirect channels, meeting or exceeding decisioning SLAs.

• Navigate and manage digital lending workflows within MeridianLink, LoanStar, Corelation, and other lending systems.

• Collaborate with merchant partners and auto dealers to ensure smooth loan processing, funding, and member experience.

• Serve as a subject matter expert for lending staff, providing guidance on loan structure, documentation requirements, and policy interpretation.

• Communicate decisions professionally to internal partners and, when necessary, directly to members, offering clear explanations of underwriting outcomes.

Support cross-sell initiatives with thoughtful, compliance-aligned product recommendations.

• Identify and implement process improvements to enhance credit quality, efficiency, and member satisfaction.

• Participate in system upgrades, new product implementations, and special projects supporting digital lending transformation.

• Maintain high accuracy and completeness in all documentation, ensuring proper file structure, funding preparation, and audit readiness.

• Participate in business development activities, including CommunityShare engagement, as aligned to department goals.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

 

 

Who Are You?

 

Requirements, Skills, and Abilities

• 3+ years of consumer loan underwriting required

• Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a fast-paced lending environment boarding and servicing various Consumer Loans.

• Strong understanding of consumer credit principles, loan documentation, income verification, and risk assessment.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills with demonstrated ability to communicate professionally at all levels, with members, dealers, merchants, and internal staff.

• Excellent analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills with the ability to exercise sound judgment.

• Self-motivated; able to work efficiently without sustained direct supervision.

• Proven ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and meet service-level deadlines.

• Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, OneNote, Outlook).

• Strong organizational skills with a focus on accuracy and compliance.

• Experience with MerdianLink, LoanStar, and Corelation Keystone platforms preferred, but not required.

• Ability to provide prompt and professional service.
